Twelve teams is the NFL-playoff shape: the top four seeds earn byes, seeds 5 through 12 play an opening round, and eight teams remain.
The math is simple and worth knowing: a single elimination tournament with 12 teams always takes exactly 11 games, because every game eliminates exactly one team and only the champion survives. That number never changes no matter how you seed or schedule, which makes planning venue time easy.
Because 12 is not a power of two, the bracket expands to 16 slots and 4 teams get a first-round bye. The byes go to seeds 1 through 4 — the strongest teams earn the rest, exactly the way professional playoffs do it. From the second round on, every slot is filled and the tree is perfectly balanced.
Seeding follows the standard nested pattern: seed 1 plays the lowest seed, seed 2 plays the second-lowest, and the pairings are arranged so that 1 and 2 cannot meet before the final, and the top four cannot meet before the semifinals. You do not need to remember any of this — type the names in seed order and the bracket places every team where it belongs.
One thing this bracket deliberately does not do is re-seed. Winners advance along fixed lines, so the path from the first round to the final is fully visible before a single game is played. That is what makes a printed sheet work: every possible matchup is already drawn, players can trace their own road to the final, and the scorekeeper just fills in winners as results come in.
Running a blind draw instead? Nothing to configure. Leave the seeds alone, pull names out of a hat, and type them onto the lines in the order you draw them. The bracket does not care whether the lines hold seeds or strangers — it prints the same either way.
When play starts, write each winner on the next line down the tree and, if you like, jot the score beside the matchup. The last line on the sheet is the champion. Everything on the page is sized so handwriting fits — the lines are the same height whether you type into them on screen or fill them in with a pen after printing.
Twelve works well for a season-long league that lets more than half its teams into the postseason — fantasy football is the famous example. Four opening games feed four rested seeds, then quarterfinals, semifinals and a final: eleven games in total, usually spread over two or three rounds of play.
The 5 vs 12 and 6 vs 11 games are often the most lopsided of the opening round, while 7 vs 10 and 8 vs 9 tend to be coin flips. If you want drama early, schedule those middle games first — the bracket geometry stays the same either way.
