Ten teams sits between eights and sixteens, so the bracket borrows six byes: seeds 1 through 6 rest while seeds 7 through 10 play in.
The math is simple and worth knowing: a single elimination tournament with 10 teams always takes exactly 9 games, because every game eliminates exactly one team and only the champion survives. That number never changes no matter how you seed or schedule, which makes planning venue time easy.
Because 10 is not a power of two, the bracket expands to 16 slots and 6 teams get a first-round bye. The byes go to seeds 1 through 6 — the strongest teams earn the rest, exactly the way professional playoffs do it. From the second round on, every slot is filled and the tree is perfectly balanced.
Seeding follows the standard nested pattern: seed 1 plays the lowest seed, seed 2 plays the second-lowest, and the pairings are arranged so that 1 and 2 cannot meet before the final, and the top four cannot meet before the semifinals. You do not need to remember any of this — type the names in seed order and the bracket places every team where it belongs.
One thing this bracket deliberately does not do is re-seed. Winners advance along fixed lines, so the path from the first round to the final is fully visible before a single game is played. That is what makes a printed sheet work: every possible matchup is already drawn, players can trace their own road to the final, and the scorekeeper just fills in winners as results come in.
Running a blind draw instead? Nothing to configure. Leave the seeds alone, pull names out of a hat, and type them onto the lines in the order you draw them. The bracket does not care whether the lines hold seeds or strangers — it prints the same either way.
When play starts, write each winner on the next line down the tree and, if you like, jot the score beside the matchup. The last line on the sheet is the champion. Everything on the page is sized so handwriting fits — the lines are the same height whether you type into them on screen or fill them in with a pen after printing.
Ten is a common count for a two-pool qualifier that merges, a company tournament across departments, or a charity event where registration lands just past eight. The play-in round is only two games — 7 vs 10 and 8 vs 9 — and after that the bracket is a clean eight-team tree.
Six byes sounds like a lot, but it is exactly what keeps round two fair: every rested seed faces a team that already won a game. Resist the urge to spread byes to the middle seeds "to be nice" — byes belong to the top, and this bracket puts them there automatically.
