Thirty-two teams in double elimination is a small marathon: up to sixty-three games, five rounds of winners bracket, and a losers side with a life of its own.
The format is exactly what the name says: a team is eliminated only after its second loss. Everyone starts in the winners bracket, which advances exactly like a single elimination tree. Lose there and you drop into the losers bracket, where every game is sudden death — one more loss and the tournament is over. The losers bracket alternates two kinds of rounds: survivors playing each other, then survivors facing the teams that just dropped down from the winners side.
32 is a power of two, so there are no byes anywhere: all 32 teams open in the winners bracket, and the losers bracket starts filling only after round one.
The grand finals pit the winners-bracket champion — undefeated — against the losers-bracket champion, who has already lost once. That is why the sheet carries a second finals slot marked If necessary (bracket reset): if the losers-side champion wins the first final, both teams now have one loss, and a true deciding game is played. The winners champion needs one win; the losers champion needs two.
Total games land between 62 and 63: 31 in the winners bracket, 30 in the losers bracket, and one or two grand finals depending on whether the reset game is needed. This sheet shows the full configuration — every slot drawn, every reset labeled — so the schedule is honest before the first game starts.
Seeding works exactly like single elimination: seed 1 opens against the lowest seed, seed 2 against the second-lowest, and the pairings nest so the top two teams cannot meet before the winners-bracket final. Type the names in seed order and every matchup falls into place — or ignore seeding entirely, pull names from a hat, and type them in draw order for a true blind draw.
Every undecided line on the sheet names its source — "Winner of W3", "Loser of W5" — in the same numbering announcers and scorekeepers use. That makes the bracket self-explanatory on the wall: anyone can trace where a team goes next, win or lose, without asking the organizer.
This is open-bracket territory — major community tournaments, big pub league finales, esports opens. The bracket rewards depth: with sixty-three possible games, seeding honestly matters more than at any other size, because a strong team buried in the wrong quarter can wreck half the field.
